I often get asked why certain sites aren’t performing as the owners had hoped. There can be lots of reasons for this, the most obvious is that it is a poor-quality site, or perhaps they haven’t done SEO or alternatively their site is getting penalised. It is always the last answer gets a few raised eyebrows and raises the expected questions as to how and why their site should be penalised by Google. When I start to explain the reasons the responses vary from surprise to anger, with very little in between.

The problem usually occurs when a website has had some SEO carried out on it, usually by the site owners, a friend who “knows a bit a bit SEO” or a company that gave the cheapest quote! You will initially start to notice that your site’s ranking and the traffic has started to fall, probably quite dramatically in a short space of time. The problem is that the SEO that you have carried out has probably fallen foul of Google’s strict rules that are designed to stop people “cheating” their way up the rankings – after all, Google wants to promote quality, not cheats!

The first things that you need to do is stop your SEO immediately! You must be seen to be taking remedial action in order to have the penalty removed and stopping doing what you are doing is the first step. Link Assistant is a great way to find out what the possible penalty is. It explains things in layman’s terms, what they look like, and the kind of tactics that will help you get your site back on the straight and narrow. Once you have established what the problem is, you can then start to move forward again and get you site back to where it should be.

It should be stressed at this point that if you don’t carry out the necessary remedial work even the best SEO that is conducted in the future will fail. We understand that this is frustrating and you may feel like you want to give up, but once the penalty has been lifted you will soon start marching up the rankings. It is worth taking the time out to ensure that the problem is fully resolved so you don’t end up back at square one within a brief period of time.
