A question that I frequently get asked is “How can I get the most out of my blogs?”. What these people really want to know is what is a blogs purpose. After all, we are always being told that we should be blogging but most people don’t really know why.
The idea is not new, indeed an article published by Hubspot back in 2015 suggested that businesses get 97% more links to their site and 67% more leads when they blog. This will obviously give your site a huge boost, not only in terms of SEO, but also when it comes to your bottom line. More leads will inevitably lead to an increase in business – the two generally go hand in hand. However, it is important to appreciate that you need to get blogging right, getting in wrong can have a negative impact.
If we are looking at blogging in the very loosest terms there are generally two types. There are those who are professional bloggers, those that specialise in a particular area, whose sole aim is to gain loyal followers who frequently read their posts. They then get companies to advertise with them and include links to their websites on particular blogs.
The second group is businesses who include blogs on their own website. In reality, these types of blog tend to have less followers but that doesn’t mean that they don’t have a significant impact when it comes to lead generation. The problem is that this can be very time consuming and this is where professional companies can help you.
It is important that most businesses understand that their blogs are not being read for entertainment purposes. Most blogs are read because people want information about a certain subject or trying to solve a problem. You should therefore design your blog to address these issues so that your site becomes the place that people refer to when they have a problem.
Most businesses want to convey what they actually do via their website. A blog gives businesses the opportunity to take advantage of less competitively searched phrases. This will, in turn, give you a better chance of ranking on the first page of Google for these terms. After all the chances of ranking highly for “Plumber” on its own are pretty slim.
It is always a good idea to some keyword research and look for less competitively searched phrases and include these in your blog. If you are confident that you can rank highly for those terms use them, if not keep looking. If you do this, create a highly optimised targeted blog post focused on these terms and you will be surprised at the effect it has on your site.
